Paint Driers for alkyd enamels

COMMET Paint Driers are produced from synthetic mono-carboxylic acids.

All COMMET Driers are supplied in dearomatized solvents.
These liquid metallic soaps are mainly used as driers in the production of solvent based paints for the oxidative polymerisation of the unsaturated carbon bonds in the alkyd resins.

COMMET Barium

Barium Octoate is used as an auxiliary drier in combination with primary driers like Cobalt and Manganese. It also improves gloss and prevents the adsorption of primary driers and thus inproves the drying stability during long storage. Barium also acts as wetting agent for pigments and fillers.

COMMET Bismuth

Bismuth Octoate can be used to replace Zirconium in paint applications where low temperatures and high humidity conditions prevail.
It is also used as an EP-Additive to replace Lead and also for Polyurethane Catalysis.

COMMET Lead

Lead Octoate is used mainly in industrial paint applications. Its use has been limited because of environmental effects. Lead promotes an even through drying and in combination with Calcium and Barium it prevents precipitation of difficult to dissolve Lead compounds. In conjunction with Butyltitanate Lead is used as an accelerator for the hardening of silicon resins.

COMMET Calcium

Calcium Octoate is used as an auxiliary feeder drier and prevents the adsorption of primary driers resulting in improved drying stability.

COMMET Cobalt

Cobalt Octoate is the most active primary drier and is used in conjunction with auxiliary and through driers to promote an even surface and through drying. Care needs to be exercised when dosing Cobalt in order to prevent a too fast initial drying which would result in surface wrinkling.

COMMET Manganese

Manganese Octoate is the second most important primary drier. It can be used as a Cobalt replacement in darker coloured paints where discolouration due to the dark brown Manganese colour is not important. High humidity may however lower the effectivity of Manganese as well.
Manganese is also used in combination with Cobalt in the offset printing ink applications.

COMMET Zinc

Zinc Octoate reduces rapid film formation and therefore improves through drying. It prevents wrinkling and is used in combination with primary and auxiliary driers. Zinc can be applied as a fungicide and in the formulation of PVC stabilizers.

COMMET Zirconium

Zirconium Octoate is only effective as an auxiliary drier in combination with primary driers. It promotes surface and through drying. It has been extensively used to replace lead because of environmental effects.
